Kubota was born in 1985 when Asahi-Shuzo Sake Brewing, a brewery founded in 1830 in Nagaoka City, Niigata Prefecture, staked its future on a bold new direction. Fourth-generation president Toru Hirasawa repositioned the company around a dry, crisp tanrei karakuchi style that became emblematic of Niigata sake and helped shift the national market toward premium varieties. Distribution through a selective licensed dealer network has preserved Kubota's mystique for four decades, making it one of the most recognized premium sake brands in Japan.
