Dewazakura Sake Brewery was founded in 1892 in Tendo, Yamagata Prefecture, and in 1980 released Oka Ginjo at an accessible price point, an act that triggered Japan's nationwide ginjo boom and changed how the entire category was consumed. Oka Ginjo held the top position in the Jizake Ninki Meigara Ranking's ginjo category for 12 consecutive years, and in 2011 Berry Bros. and Rudd, Britain's oldest wine merchant, selected it as the first Japanese sake in their lineup. The brewery now exports to more than 30 countries and has earned awards at the International Wine Challenge and U.S. National Sake Appraisal.
