Sekaiitto was founded in 1884 by Yaemon Minakata, father of the world-renowned biologist Kumagusu Minakata, in Wakayama City, taking over land from the former Kishu clan rice warehouses. The Minakata brand of sake, brewed with water from the Kinokawa River in the fruit-rich Wakayama region, earned a Platinum Award at Sake-China 2018, while the brewery's umeshu has been inducted into the Hall of Fame of the National Umeshu Competition.
