Sake Brand

Genpei

Genpei Shuzo, founded in 1673 in Ono City, Fukui Prefecture, named its brand to capture the legendary rivalry of the Heike and Genji clans — sweetness for the Heike's elegance, dryness for the Genji's valor, and sharpness to evoke the tension of their clash. The brewery uses contract-grown Gohyakumangoku rice from local Ono farmers and water from Oshimizu, one of Japan's designated 100 Famous Waters, to craft clean, dry sake. Genpei Junmai Ginjo took a gold award at the 2018 Brussels International Competition, and the brewery's philosophy centers on sake that accompanies food rather than dominating it.
