Umegae Shuzo was founded in 1787 in Sasebo City, Nagasaki Prefecture, and received its name from the lord of the Omura domain. Seven of the brewery's original Edo-period structures were designated as tangible cultural properties in 2002, and the brewery has received recognition at the Annual Japan Sake Awards for its daiginjo and junmai-shu productions.
