Ishioka Shuzo was established in Ibaraki Prefecture, situated between Kasumigaura lake to the east and Mount Tsukuba to the west — a location praised in classical verse for its scenic beauty and long recognized as a prime sake-brewing area. The Tsukuba brand draws on the subterranean waters of the Tsukuba mountain system and locally grown rice, and the brewery launched a premium line under the Tsukuba name to mark the 1985 Tsukuba Expo.
