Yoshinotomo Shuzo was founded in 1877 in Toyama City, with the brand name meaning a friend with whom one shares sake, reflecting the brewery's warm, communal philosophy. Even during the food shortages following World War II, the brewery continued producing junmai sake using only rice, koji, and water, establishing an early commitment to pure-rice brewing that has defined its identity ever since. The Kisaki series, launched in 2018, won the Grand Prix at the London Namazake Awards in its debut year and is now exported across Asia, Europe, and the United States.
