Ryujin is produced by Ryujin Shuzo in Tatebayashi City, Gunma Prefecture, a brewery whose origins date to 1597 when its sake was presented to the fifth Tokugawa shogun, Tsunayoshi, who reportedly bestowed the name Ryujin in recognition of its quality. Today the small, approximately 1,300-koku brewery maintains meticulous hand-crafting traditions including limited-absorption rice washing and in-house milling, releasing its sake only through a select network of specialty retailers.
