Founded in 1716 in Shiogama City, Miyagi Prefecture, Abekan Shuzo began as the official purveyor of sacred sake to Shiogama Shrine, one of the most revered shrines in the Tohoku region. The brewery has spent over 300 years refining a style it describes as sake that enhances the meal rather than dominating it, using primarily Miyagi-grown rice to complement the city's celebrated seafood. Since 2013, the brewery has also explored entirely new directions in brewing, from highly aromatic styles to low-alcohol offerings, without abandoning its food-friendly core.
