Founded in 1868 in Akitsu, a small port town on Hiroshima's Seto Inland Sea coast, Imada Sake Brewery has built Fukucho into one of Japan's most recognized craft sake brands under the leadership of Miho Imada, who became toji in 2017 and was named one of the BBC's 100 most inspiring women in 2020. The brewery follows the philosophy of its founder, Miura Senzaburo: a hundred tries will bring a thousand improvements. Fukucho is also known for reviving the ancient Hattanso rice variety from near-extinction beginning in 2001, which now forms the basis of several signature expressions.
