Kuranomachi is produced by Hokkan Shuzo in Tochigi City, Tochigi Prefecture, a city known as Koedo (Little Edo) for its rows of Edo-period warehouses lining the old river trade routes. The brewery, established in 1973, combines techniques inherited from Niigata's Echigo toji tradition with the skills of its current head brewer, who holds certification in both Shimotsuke and Nanbu toji styles. Hokkan Shuzo operates year-round brewing facilities and produces approximately 30,000 koku annually for both domestic and export markets.
