Taketsuru Shuzou Co., Ltd. has been brewing sake in Takehara, Hiroshima, since 1733, making it the city's oldest sake brewery; the site originally operated as a salt maker from 1651. The brewery is internationally known as the birthplace of Taketsuru Masataka, the man who founded Nikka Whisky and became the father of Japanese whisky. Taketsuru Shuzo operates as a fully junmai (pure rice) brewery, maintaining the traditional kimoto-zukuri method with the founding motto sake making that makes cooking delicious, using top-quality rice from local Hiroshima growers.
