Takakiya is produced by Hamashima Shuzou, a small, family-run brewery in the rural Bungo Ono area of Oita Prefecture, guided by its future sixth-generation owner Yasuhiro Hamashima. Since 2006 the brewery has cultivated its own sake rice on farmland that has grown to 13 hectares around the kura, producing entirely handmade sake in small batches designed to accompany food throughout a meal.
