Harahonten Co., Ltd. in Hiroshima City has operated the Horaitsuru brewery since 1805, and the operation became known as one of the smallest sake breweries in Japan after it relocated production into a 300-square-meter basement facility beneath an apartment building in 1995, choosing to continue brewing rather than close. The brewery produces small batches of approximately 180 kilograms of rice at a time throughout the year, maintaining a range of at least nine products including a junmai ginjo noted for its fresh character and firm acidity.
