Shike Shuzoten, the producer of Matabe, operates in Iwaki City in Fukushima Prefecture, and the Matabe brand has such deep roots in the local community that approximately 95 percent of its production is consumed within Iwaki. The brewery has won first prize at the Japan Excellent New Brew of Sake Awards Ceremony 15 times, building a reputation for quality that far exceeds its modest distribution footprint. Matabe is characterized by a refreshing aroma, and the century-old brewery building has been carefully maintained and repaired throughout the brand's history.
