本酒造自江戶時代1806年起，在倉敷島（現岡山縣倉敷市兒島）從事釀造業。兒島自古便是纖維產業繁榮之地，有「纖維之島」之稱，牛仔布、校服和榻榻米等各類纖維工廠雲集。這裡也是日本年日照時間最長、降雨最少的「晴天之國」岡山，但因受中國山地影響，水資源依然豐富。酒造以一級河川高梁川的水源釀酒，所用米全部來自倉敷市，以醇厚乾辣、百喝不厭的口感，釀造深受當地喜愛的地酒。

沿革
- 1806Mr. Kichizo Suwaki, the first generation, established a sake brewery under the name "Masuya" in Kojima, Kurashiki City.
- 1854-1860During the Ansei period, the third generation, Mr. Yasutaro, took over the family business after studying at the University of Michigan in the United States, and later renamed the brewery "Maebatake Sake Brewery".
- 1903While Heizaburo Maebatake IV was the representative, the brewery received a letter of commendation from the Emperor of Japan at the 5th Cabinet Industrial Exposition, and the trademark was changed from "Fuji Masamune" to "Gion".
- 1911"Gion" was awarded a certificate of merit, and the brand name was later changed to the current "Sankan".
- 1950The company was incorporated as Sankan Shuzo Limited and resumed brewing sake after a wartime suspension.
- 1976Toshishige Maebatake, the sixth generation, returned to the brewery after studying at Tokyo University of Agriculture and took over the traditional Bicchu Toji techniques.
- 2011Toshishige Maebatake, the sixth generation, was awarded the Medal with Blue Ribbon.
- 2012Received a certificate of appreciation as a "well-established company in Kurashiki" founded over 200 years ago.
