Suisen is a sake brewery with roots stretching back roughly 200 years in Rikuzentakata, Iwate Prefecture, deeply embedded in the coastal community and culture of the Sanriku coast. When the March 2011 tsunami destroyed the brewery and took seven lives, the brewery refused to cease production; rival brewery Iwate Meijo opened its facilities to Suisen, and within 18 months a new brewery was built and operating in the nearby town of Ofunato. All of Suisen's sake is brewed exclusively with Iwate-grown rice varieties purchased directly from local farmers.
