Kitatakara is brewed by Yamani Watanabe, a sake producer established in 1879 in Otaru, Hokkaido, one of the northernmost sake-producing regions in Japan. The brewery's historic shop building, constructed in 1926 to sell locally brewed sake, remains part of Otaru's preserved Ura-Otaru Montparnasse cultural complex. Kitatakara draws on Hokkaido's cold climate and clean water to produce sake rooted in the northern island's brewing identity.
