나라 분지의 서쪽 끝, 주신(酒神)을 모시는 신사의 동쪽과 영봉 후타가미산을 바라보는 고시바씨 고호도의 서쪽에 위치한 양조장으로, 1830년(덴포 원년)에 창업하였다. 메이지 초기에 3대 사와다가 자가 논에서 수확한 주조용 쌀과 곤고·가쓰라기야마 계통의 지하수를 사용하여 야마토 지역 고유의 사케를 탄생시켰다. 오사카 공업학교(현 오사카대학)에서 양조를 배운 4대 사와다에 의해 사케 품질이 크게 향상되었으며, 나라를 대표하는 명주로 성장하였다. 상쾌하면서도 풍부한 맛으로 나라의 번성함을 떠올리게 하는 우아함을 담아낸 사케로, 오늘날도 전통과 새 시대의 감각을 함께 담아 품질 향상을 위해 매일 연구를 거듭하고 있다.

- 1830Founder Sadashiro Sawada began brewing sake as a side business to his indigo-dyeing trade in Goido, Kashiba, Nara, using locally harvested rice.
- 1889Third-generation head Sadajuro Sawada formally began the sake brewing trade and launched the brand 'Tomeikan'.
- 1935Fourth-generation head Teiji Sawada, also a fermentation scientist, devised a fermented liquid from vegetables and fruit to protect the health of brewery workers, laying the foundation for the company's health-food business.
- 1953Sawada Shuzo Co., Ltd. was incorporated on November 5, 1953, with Teiji Sawada as its first president.
- 1975Fifth-generation head Sadako Sawada, who succeeded her brother killed in the war, launched the premium junmai-focused brand 'Kankiko'.
- 1988Kankiko won the gold prize at the National New Sake Awards (Zenkoku Shinshu Kanpyokai).
- 2019After a period of outsourcing production to a partner company, the brewery resumed in-house brewing from 2019, completing its first in-house batch in about 30 years in February 2020.
