沿革

1. 1906Saito Sakubei, the 14th-generation head of the "Saitoya" family business (kimono trading, vinegar and koji production, salt wholesale) in Kamanomae, Kesennuma, began brewing unrefined sake in Oribe Village, Iwate Prefecture, about 20km west of the current head office. That same year, when the new sake was first offered at Murone Shrine, the morning star reflected in the measuring box (masu) became the origin of the company name and crest, Kakuboshi.
2. 2003The direct-sales shop, a wooden two-story kura-style building from the early Showa era, was designated a Registered Tangible Cultural Property.
3. 2011The Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami damaged the ground floor of the direct-sales shop and swept its second floor toward the back of the property.
4. 2016The direct-sales shop, which had been dismantled, was rebuilt on its original site. The ground floor now serves as the shop, and the second floor as an exhibition room documenting the recovery from the earthquake.
