Founded in 1839 in Kasai City, Hyogo Prefecture, Fukunishiki takes its name from a combination of the auspicious words for fortune and brocade, a nod to the view of Mount Hokezan from the brewery's historic site at the entrance to Hokezan Ichijoji Temple. Two generations ago the brewery pivoted entirely to junmai sake and by 1995 had converted all its rice sourcing to local Kasai fields, making it one of the more committed regional terroir producers in Hyogo.
