江戶天保年間，山口家園中每天都有黃鶯從天滿宮飛來，以山泉水潤喉嬉戲。第六代利助於1832年以此泉水為釀造水創立酒造，旨在釀出無愧於天神的清酒，品牌「庭の鶯」由此而來。酒造使用筑後川地下水及福岡縣產的米，追求與九州食材和料理完美搭配的酒質，不斷精進，力求最高品質。

沿革
- 1832Received brewing permission from the Arima Domain, founding Yamaguchi Shuzojo; the current brewing kura was built.
- 1911The 6th-generation head Riasuke Yamaguchi was posthumously honored with the Junior Fifth Rank by the Emperor.
- 1924The 8th-generation head Giroku Yamaguchi expanded the brewery and entered many national competitions.
- 1975Scaled back large industrial equipment and began focusing on premium junmai-grade sake.
- 1989Co-founded the Fukuoka Meishukai (fine sake association) with 16 other breweries; Naonori Yamaguchi became its first chairman.
- 1997Began exporting to the United States.
- 2007Began producing doburoku after regulatory easing on other-brewed-alcohol licenses.
- 2012Won gold awards for junmai ginjo and junmai sake at the 1st Fukuoka Prefecture Sake Competition.
