明治时代,酒铺里的日本酒是生酒,从木桶中取出的酒只需一只食德立就能运送给顾客。1937年中日战争爆发后,极度的物资短缺导致军用米比酒米更受重视,酒藏被迫减产。陷入困境的酒藏将酒用水稀释后批给批发商,批发商再次加水稀释。双方都大量兑水的结果,使得酒被称为"金鱼酒",意指"稀薄得连金鱼都能游泳"。这种劣质酒卖给顾客并传遍街头,且尽量酿得浓一些再加水稀释,税负还更低。将酒用水"膨大"后,销售额也随之上升。尽管物资匮乏,这类恶习在那个时代依然盛行。尽管如此,渡边家第七代久慈坚持不稀释酒精原样出货。因此,顾客们纷纷赞道:"蓬莱给的真是美味的原酒",这段深受珍视的佳话至今仍广为流传。"蓬莱无修正酒"秉承"即便乱世,也绝不放弃正直酿酒"的家训,凝聚着蓬莱的精神,是蓬莱原点之作的纯米酒。

蓬莱酒造所在的飞驒市古川町,位于岐阜县最北端,四周被北阿尔卑斯山脉和飞驒山脉海拔逾3000米的群山环抱,地处古川盆地。司马辽太郎曾在《街道行旅》中写道,飞驒古川的街道风貌雅致而古朴,令人感受到一种亲切的面貌与个性。一之町排列着历史悠久的老商铺,濑户川沿岸白壁黑腰的仓库连绵不断,氛围沉静而润泽。
