明治時代,酒鋪裡的日本酒是生酒,從木桶中取出的酒只需一隻食德立就能運送給顧客。1937年中日戰爭爆發後,極度的物資短缺導致軍用米比酒米更受重視,酒藏被迫減產。陷入困境的酒藏將酒用水稀釋後批給批發商,批發商再次加水稀釋。雙方都大量兌水的結果,使得酒被稱為「金魚酒」,意指「稀薄得連金魚都能游泳」。這種劣質酒賣給顧客並傳遍街頭,且盡量釀得濃一些再加水稀釋,稅負還更低。將酒用水「膨大」後,銷售額也隨之上升。儘管物資匱乏,這類惡習在那個時代依然盛行。儘管如此,渡邊家第七代久慈堅持不稀釋酒精原樣出貨。因此,顧客們紛紛讚道:「蓬萊給的真是美味的原酒」,這段深受珍視的佳話至今仍廣為流傳。「蓬萊無修正酒」秉承「即便亂世,也絕不放棄正直釀酒」的家訓,凝聚著蓬萊的精神,是蓬萊原點之作的純米酒。
