Produced at a brewery founded in 1655 in Toride, Ibaraki, the name Kimibandai was bestowed by imperial decree in 1884 after the local well water won favor during a military exercise attended by the Emperor Meiji. The brewery uses the Tone River's subterranean water and rice from contracted local farmers, maintaining hand-crafted production from rice washing through koji-making.
