Oujiman sake traces its origins to 1724, when the brewery was established under the Sato Nizaemon family name in Tsuruoka City, Yamagata Prefecture, one of the region's oldest sake-producing lineages. The brand name combines characters representing the ancient provinces of Dewa and Mutsu, with 'jiman' meaning pride, expressing the brewery's identity as a proud product of Tohoku's landscape. In 2013, the brewery was taken under the wing of fellow Yamagata producer Tatenokawa, revitalizing its operations and introducing a modern label called Wagauji alongside the historic Oujiman line.
