Suehiro Shuzo was founded in 1850 in Aizuwakamatsu, Fukushima Prefecture, where it operates from two historic breweries — the Kaei-gura and the Hakase-gura — each using water from distinct mountain sources. The brewery was an early adopter of yamahai fermentation, conducting trial production of the method at the instigation of yamahai pioneer Kiniichiro Kagi in the Taisho era, and nine of its Kaei-gura structures are now registered as national tangible cultural properties.
