Shussejo takes its name from Hamamatsu Castle, locally nicknamed the Castle of Worldly Success because Tokugawa Ieyasu and other lords who governed there went on to rise to national power. Hamamatsu Shuzo, founded in 1871, draws ultra-soft groundwater from 100 meters beneath the Tenryu River basin, which produces a subtle natural sweetness in the finish that distinguishes Shizuoka sake. The brewing tradition was established by a master from the Nambu toji lineage, and today younger local brewers continue that heritage for a sake consumed almost entirely within Hamamatsu City.
