Kiyoizumigawa is the flagship brand of Eau de Vie Shonai, a brewery founded in 1875 in Sakata, Yamagata, whose name itself is borrowed from the French phrase for water of life. The brewery sits just 50 meters from the Sea of Japan and draws its brewing water from a well 50 meters below the surface, a source that inspired the brand's name — clear spring river. Working at small scale with full hand-production techniques, the brewery has accumulated awards at the National New Sake Competition and the Tohoku New Sake Competition, and is recognized for its skill in ginjo brewing.
