Kinokuniyabunzaemon is named after the legendary Edo-period merchant from Kishu who made his fortune transporting Wakayama mandarin oranges by sea to Edo, and is produced by Nakano BC in Wakayama Prefecture. The brand uses carefully selected sake rice varieties and won Gold at the 2011 International Wine Challenge, then the world's largest wine competition, in the sake category. Nakano BC was established in 1961 and has built Kinokuniyabunzaemon into Wakayama's most internationally recognized sake label.
