戰前作為食用米從北陸到東北地區被廣泛栽培,但不適合戰後引進的使用化肥的近代農法。通過《夏子的酒》(當年即時追劇的觀眾多為40歲以上)重回大眾視野,但由於並非酒造好適米,釀造時需格外謹慎。稻株高達150公分,是日本最高的水稻品種,栽培難度也居日本之首。
