- 1869Founded by Michimasa Morishima, a former samurai of the Mito Domain, who built the brewery in Kawajiri, northern Hitachi (Ibaraki Prefecture), drawn by the area's abundant rice and pure spring water flowing from the southern Abukuma mountains.
- 1945The brewery and residence were destroyed by fire during World War II air raids.
- 1953The brand 'Taikan' was born through the friendship between the 4th-generation head, Koichiro, and master Nihonga painter Taikan Yokoyama, who loved the brewery's sake.
- 1959Won its first Gold Award at the National New Sake Awards.
- 2002Began contract cultivation of Miyamanishiki rice with a trusted specialist farmer in neighboring Takahagi City.
- 2011Suffered major damage from the Great East Japan Earthquake, including broken bottles, collapsed exterior walls, and large cracks in the stone walls.
- 2019To mark the 150th anniversary, the flagship brand 'Taikan' was renewed as 'Fuji Taikan', referencing painter Taikan's many Mt. Fuji works and the auspicious meaning of Fuji as 'number one in Japan'.
- 2019Launched the new brand 'Morishima', brewed by the brewery-owner-turned-toji, embedding the family name and their resolve into the sake.
