Obata Sake Brewery was founded in 1892 in Mano, on Sado Island in Niigata Prefecture, taking over a brewing operation that had existed since the Edo period. The brewery's guiding principle, expressed as Shihowajokan (harmonizing the four treasures of rice, water, brewers, and the terroir of Sado Island), drives everything from their eco-friendly rice farming to their handcrafted production methods. Manotsuru has earned gold medals at the National New Sake Awards and the IWC, and is served in the first-class cabins of Air France and aboard the Shikishima luxury train.
