Funaotaki takes its name from the scenic Funaotaki Waterfall fed by Haruna Lake in western Gunma Prefecture, a site historically off limits to the public as a sacred place. Founder Genki Shibasaki chose this name to honor the local landscape, and the brewery has since built its reputation on sake carefully brewed with mineral-rich subsoil water from the Haruna Mountain system using fully handcrafted koji at every stage. Shibasaki Sake Brewery has earned the Gold Prize at the National New Sake Competition seven times.
