Sempuku is produced by Miyake Honten, founded in 1856 in Kure City, Hiroshima Prefecture, a brewery that rose to national prominence when its consistent quality led to contracts supplying the Imperial Japanese Navy at bases across the country. The brand name honors the two women behind the first proprietor: his mother Fuku and wife Chito, whose names were combined to form Sempuku when the brand was established in 1916. Brewing water comes from the soft spring of Haigamine, which filters through granite in the Chugoku mountain range and imparts a characteristically smooth, rounded quality.
