Tanizakura Shuzo, founded in 1848 at the northern tip of Yamanashi Prefecture on the southern slopes of the Yatsugatake mountains, traces its origins to a fortunate discovery: when the founding family dug the site for the brewery, they unearthed a cache of old coins and took the name Furuzeni-ya ('old coin house') as their trade mark. The brewery mills all of its own rice in-house, polishing away an average of forty percent of each grain, and draws brewing water from the artesian springs of the Yatsugatake highland aquifer. Its Junmai Daiginjo Sakura Sakura won the highest gold award at the 2016 Hong Kong IWSC, and the brewery has continued to win top prizes at the Tokyo Regional Taxation Bureau Sake Evaluation.
