Story & Media
History
1818
Founded in the Bunsei era (Bunsei 1) in Nanasawa, Sagami Province (present-day Atsugi), when the first-generation Koganei Denshiro began brewing unrefined sake using well water drawn from a dug well; that same underground water is still used in brewing today.
1911
Fifth-generation head Tamezo dammed the Tamagawa river behind the brewery and built what was then the world's smallest private hydroelectric power plant, supplying electricity for the household, brewery lighting/heat, and agriculture.
1929
Tamezo established the Japan Sake Brewers Association Central Union (Nihon Shuzo Kumiai Chuokai) and became its first chairman.
1943
Sixth-generation head Eiichi oversaw wartime consolidation of Kanagawa's sake breweries (from 47 down to 22); the brewery's flagship sake name was changed from 'Koganei-zakura' to 'Sakarimasu' after the war, meaning increasing prosperity.
1998
A new brewhouse was built for beer brewing, launching the 'Sagami Beer' craft beer business, now producing seven to eight varieties including happoshu.
2006
Starting in Heisei 18, the brewery began producing 'Junmaishu Denshiro', a junmai sake made with locally grown Atsugi rice (Kinuhikari, later Harumi) and the brewery's well water, named after founder Denshiro.
2019
In Heisei 31, the brewery set up an aging cellar 100 meters underground in the inspection gallery of Miyagase Dam, beginning production of 'Dam-Aged Sake' as a specialty tied to Higashi-Tanzawa tourism.
