Story & Media
History
1874
Founded (around Meiji 7) by first-generation Kozo, who brewed sake using water from the Sakurai River; the brand was originally called Sakurai-zake.
1905
In Meiji 38, third-generation Tomoyoshi survived heavy fighting at 203 Hill in the Russo-Japanese War and returned home; after seeing a red-crowned crane land near the brewery, he renamed the brand Chiyozuru to celebrate his survival.
1988
Fourth-generation Yoshihiro passed away; the records he left behind remain the main source for the brewery's history.
