Founded in 1862 in the town of Aizu Sakashita on the west side of the Aizu Basin, Fukushima Prefecture, Toyokuni Shuzo has remained committed to fully handmade brewing for over 160 years. The fifth-generation head Takuya Takaku serves as his own toji and presses all sake, from standard to premium grades, using the traditional funa-shibori trough press method. Toyokuni's sparkling sake earned the Platinum Award at Kura Master and was selected as an official toast sake at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.
