Shukuhou Shuzo Co., Ltd. was founded in 1885 in Wakayama City, drawing on the underground water of the Kinokawa River with sake-brewing rice including Yamada Nishiki. The brand name Shukuho (祝砲, salute cannon) was inspired by Japan's victory in the Sino-Japanese War during the Meiji period, and the sake remains in use at Shinto ceremonies including ship-launching celebrations as a symbol of auspicious occasion. The brewery won gold awards at the National New Sake Competition in 1993, 1994, and 1998.
