Founded in 1735 in Fukuoka Prefecture, Kikubijin Shuzo brewed the sake that poet Hakushu Kitahara adored throughout his life; Kitahara's own calligraphy of the name Kikubijin appears on the brewery's labels to this day. The brewery presses its sake by hand using drip-pressing and fune-pressing methods rather than mechanical means, drawing on water from the Yabe River alluvial flows and working with Yamanishiki and locally grown Yumeichigo sake rice. Kikubijin has earned a gold prize at the National New Sake Competition and four consecutive excellence awards in the pure rice division of the Fukuoka Regional Sake Appraisal.
