Suzuki Shuzoten's Iwakikotobuki was born around 1840 in Namie Town, Fukushima, where the brewery stood directly on the coast of Ukedo Port and became the toast of local fishermen celebrating bountiful catches. The 2011 Great East Japan Earthquake and tsunami physically destroyed the original kura, and the nuclear evacuation zone forced the family to relocate to Nagai City in Yamagata Prefecture, where they reestablished before the year's end. On March 20, 2021, the brewery completed its return to Namie, opening a new kura at the town's roadside station where visitors can watch sake being made. The Iwakikotobuki Junmaishu carries the emotional and cultural weight of the brewery's survival and return, now brewed in Yamagata's cool, rice-rich Okitama basin.
Pure rice sake with rich umami depth — the everyday staple of Japan.
