Sequoia Sake Company, founded in San Francisco around 2014 by Jake Myrick, Noriko Kamei, and Warren Pfahl, is the city's first local artisan sake brewery, producing all-natural junmai ginjo nama sake using organically grown Sacramento Valley rice, Yosemite watershed water, and heirloom koji. In 2019, Sequoia became the first non-Japanese producer outside Japan to win a gold medal at the Tokyo Sake Competition, a milestone that underlined the legitimacy of its California-rooted, traditionally grounded approach.
