Ooita Meijo was formed in 1958 when six sake breweries in the Shimoge area of northern Oita Prefecture, each with roots going back to the Keio era, merged to establish a joint company. The Futabayama brand honors Futabayama Sadaji, the legendary sumo yokozuna from Usa City in Oita who set an unbeaten record of 69 consecutive bouts between 1936 and 1943.
