History

1532-1596
The Nawa family's history began when the first-generation Nawa Hiroe, of samurai origin, entered commerce in Nawaura, Ako district of Banshu (Harima).
1582-1640
The second-generation head, Yuetsu, expanded the business to Kyoto.
1645-1694
The third-generation head, Hisanari, adopted the trade name Masuya.
1807(文化4年)
Nawa Saburoemon Hirou, a purveyor merchant to the Akita domain, was ordered by lord Satake Yoshimasa to study sericulture and silk weaving, and also established an official sake brewing trial office, the origin of the family's sake brewing.
1830(文政13年)
The family settled on the banks of the Omachi canal in Akita city.
1871(明治4年)
Opened the head store and retail shop by the Omachi canal, started sake brewing in Tsuchizaki, and continued brewing soy sauce and miso, founding the business as a sole proprietorship.
1916(大正5年)
Started a kimono fabric business, built a new drapery shop next to the head store, and incorporated as Nawa Shoten Co., Ltd. with 100,000 yen in capital, inheriting the sake, soy sauce and miso brewing businesses.
1927-1928(昭和2〜3年)
The current sake brewery was completed: the first reinforced-concrete sake brewery in Tohoku (fourth in Japan), designed by Hanaoka Masatsune, first director of the Akita Brewing Experiment Station, and built by Takenaka-gumi of Osaka (now Takenaka Corporation).
