Maihime began brewing sake in Suwa, Nagano in 1894 after splitting from a soy sauce and miso producer, guided by the motto of face-to-face sake making that reflects a close relationship between brewer and drinker. The brewery is one of the Five Suwa Breweries (Suwa Gokura), five breweries located within 500 meters of each other along the Koshu Kaido, each sharing the same underground water from the Kirigamine Mountains while brewing sake with its own distinctive character. Shinjumaihime is one of the expressions produced under this heritage, representing the brewery's premium junmai lineup.
