Onnajoshu is the signature brand of Iwamura Jozo, founded in 1787 in Iwamura Town, Gifu Prefecture, and takes its name from the celebrated female castle lord of Iwamura Castle, the aunt of Oda Nobunaga, who held the fortress against the Takeda clan. The brewery's guiding motto since its founding has been reiro, fukuiku (clear and lustrous, richly fragrant), and it uses 100% Gifu Prefecture-grown rice with natural spring water in all production. The house style leans toward a full-bodied, richly flavored sake with a layered fragrance rooted in the local rice.
